  • The Mirror in the Dusk

    Brinsley Macnamara

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Jan. 30, 2018)
Excerpt from The Mirror in the DuskThe children came adventurously across the old broken fences into the wild, weedy orchard of the crab trees. It was a way more in keeping with the desertion and desolation of the orchard to come like this rather than up the grass-grown boreen and through all the wooden gates with their lichened, half-rotten bars. At the last fence they paused, and their bare legs gleamed whitely against the rank profusion of the untended hedge. It was saturday morning, and the day ln itself stood for release from school and the freedom of the fields Their young, bright minds were filled with gladness, and amid all the wild wonder of the grassy spaces there was no place at all that held the same lure as the crab-tree orchard. It was a place that never seemed lonely like the low lakes of the valley or the hills all splashed with golden furze up which one climbed into the rich, windy fields. It never seemed to hold to itself any life of pain making a pang of separation to flow into their hearts when the evening fell. There was something lovely that seemed to linger about it always hiding affectionately what life or death it held from all mean, sad things. No beautiful place out of a fairy story had ever been contrived by telling to their minds, and so the eyes of all their longing reached out to this place. And the crabs were not a bit like other crabs. They were sweet, sweet nearly as apples and, besides, they were forbidden fruit, and without a single trace of sourness.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • The Girl in the Mirror

    Elizabeth Garver Jordan

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 6, 2015)
The little city of Devondale, Ohio, had shaken off for one night at least the air of aristocratic calm that normally distinguished it from the busy mill towns on its right and left. Elm Avenue, its leading residence street, usually presented at this hour only an effect of watchful trees, dark shrubbery, shaded lamps, and remote domestic peace. Now, however, it had blossomed into a brilliant thoroughfare, full of light, color, and movement, on all of which the December stars winked down as if in intimate understanding.

Paperback (Leopold Classic Library, July 1, 2016)
About the Book Books dealing with State and local histories in the United States may examine a city, a suburb, a municipality, a region, a community, an association, a church group, or the entire State. In fact, local history, is the largest category of history publishing. Often being of the community that is the subject of the book, local or regional historians can provide a specific insight into their subject matter. Also in this Book The next decades up to World War 1 saw large migrations from Europe and massive growth in the US economy. The US had a short but decisive influence on World War 1, suffered during the Great Depression, and had an even greater decisive influence on the outcome of World War 2. The US then engaged in a Cold War with its military and ideological adversary, the USSR, which disintegrated in 1991. Over the 20th century the US was not just a dynamo of technological advancement, but also contributed greatly to world growth. About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. While these books may have occasional imperfections, we consider that only hand checking of every page ensures readable content without poor picture quality, blurred or missing text etc. That's why we: republish only hand checked books; that are high quality; enabling readers to see classic books in original formats; that are unlikely to have missing or blurred pages. Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 11, 2014)
Automobiles poured through the wide gates of its various homes and joined a ceaseless procession of vehicles. Pedestrians, representing every class of the city's social life, jostled one another on the sidewalks as they hurried onward, following this vanguard. Overwrought policemen barked instructions at chauffeurs and sternly reprimanded daring souls who attempted to move in a direction opposite to that the crowd was following. For the time, indeed, there seemed to be but one destination which a self-respecting citizen of Devondale might properly have in mind; and already many of the elect had reached this objective and had comfortably passed through its wide doors, down its aisles, and into its cushioned pews.

Life changes such as diseases/illnesses, accidents, crime victimizations, natural disasters, injuries from wars, disabilities, etc. can leave some people with new physical, mental and emotional changes. Some in our society are so cruel that they laugh, insult, and mock people dealing with such changes and to the person experiencing the non pleasant behaviors and words of others, there is a deep hurt many can not understand.Take a journey with Dianne, a beautiful duck from a beautiful family who finds herself disfigured by a fisherman's hook that tears her beak apart. Friends and family alike begin to see her as ugly and as a result, so does Dianne herself. A beaver from another part of the forest who has been watching Dianne befriends her and she follows to the part of the forest where others live who are more loving. There she enters a new world of self discovery and self love. She learns she can see her new scars as beauty or as ugly and she chooses to embrace them as beautiful. The story is one so many face. I faced it when dealing with weight, hair loss and lash loss as a result from cancer treatment. Those closest to me were some of the same ones whose words cut me just as much as the whispering words I would hear from strangers I passed by often. Took me some time but I, too, had to remember the only thing that matters is how I feel about myself and how I love myself. This story is to encourage others that no matter what is on the outside, true beauty is within. It is to encourage others to remember scars and appearance are testimony that you survived whatever you have had to endure. This story is also for others to realize that laughter and negative words spoken can penetrate deeply and hurt another.
